Man, we all know Flash sucks. You know I always hated flash and, for instance, always designed my sites in HTML+CSS (oh, or maybe it was because I didn't bother to learn Flash... oh well, details).

Flash was bound to die, and I believe anything else than HTML5 (if HTML5 is well standardized and used) is bound to die (here referring Silverlight and others). As it has always been: different technologies emerge, the most open and flexible one imposes itself as a standard.

This is standards. This is uniformity. That is how the future is built.

On a second note, I would point out that it is nice that HTML5 is imposing itself (should it actually do) as a standard, considering it is build by an organization dedicated to standardization - the W3C - unlike other de-facto standards, for instance Ethernet, TCP/IP, or USB.

Finally, Apple happened to be right. As ou say, a bit too early. But they should really make their position related to different aspects more clear and understandable by anyone else than Steve Jobs himself. Like App Store admission, and design choices.

Haven't tried Chrome, have you? :) I am currently using Chrome Dev for Mac (not Beta). It's quite fast (with several extensions enabled). The multi-process architecture is by far its greatest thing - I can kill any tab/extension process going loose (eating up CPU/memory) using the built-in Task Manager.

I would like to point out that, as one that reads /. knows (you can read the last ~50 posts on firefox), firefox has started to lag behind recently. It's starting to be slow and heavy.

Chrome and Opera are clearly taking off now [1].

I'm not trying to advertise, I know Firefox has been an awesome browser (though i never used it), but sometimes you got to change. Like I started to change from Opera to Chrome (though I don't know if I won't come back some time, they're really tight).

You might also like Porticus (http://porticus.alittledrop.com/), as a GUI for MacPorts (even though the CLI version works all the time, some sort of visualization could help).

I personally look for Mac OS X applications on http://osx.iusethis.com/ and use AppFresh (http://osx.iusethis.com/app/appfresh) to check if they are outdated (does not always work).

Of course, the CLI-style of upgrading packages (Linux distributions, MacPorts/Fink) works better, but some native Mac OS X apps are not available through MacPorts (especially non-open source apps).

First, flight is not cool. It's useful; entertaining to some extent. It's been cool on the times of "Catch Me If You Can" or the "Aviator", but now it's just some other means of transport. Fast, indeed. Almost fail-safe, indeed, considering one ignores stupid media networks which make a big deal out of every plane crash.

Second, we, as a species, have not reached space. I consider the term scratched more appropriate. So, we have scratched space.

Since we have not reached space, we cannot infer that flight leads to space. It could be some other means of traveling not yet developed.

Why have I not included flight?
I feel it just as a stage in our rapid evolution. I feel that at the right time it shall be massively replaced by the next best thing. It took quite a long time to replace carriage with automobile/truck etc. It took incredibly less time to replace land telephones with mobile cell phones. It shall take even less time to replace flight (therefore airplanes) with the next best thing.

Ah, the toilet, of course. Quite a nice invention, I may say.

ReT provides an interesting approach and argumentation towards this useful invention. I agree with him. I appreciate the inventor of the toilet, too.

However, I do not consider the toilet remarkable enough to be present in my top n (n may change over time, currently reached 7). In the comments, yes, it may be present. It is a well deserved place.

The toilet has always been there in one way or another. The inventor is actually all the humans that improved it over time and reached its current status, shape and utility.

Why have I not included the WHEEL or the HAMMER yet? They had actually to have been invented, but all in all it's almost the same: they kind of always had been there (due to the fact they had been invented at our very beginning as tool inventors), in one shape or another, continuously improved by all humans.
